Tipp’s Tip: Mulholland Cycling

I am fine, thank youmulholland highway

By: Steve Tipp

I am a road cyclist. I’m one of those guys that wear those goofy spandex shorts and shirt & a helmet and hit it on my bike.  I ride 3 days per week – about 75 total.  Usually I ride up in the Mulholland Corridor here in Calabasas.  The roads are not too traffic-y and the scenery is beautiful.  This is world class road cycling country.

Yesterday I got a call in the morning from my sister and one in the evening from a good friend, asking if I was alright.  They had heard a news report that a cyclist had been hit on Mulholland Hwy and they were concerned about me.  Actually 4 cyclist were hit by an 81 year old driver (according to the LA Times http://tinyurl.com/2a8nd68 ) and 3 were airlifted to UCLA.  A tragic situation.

Cycling to me is absolutely the greatest sport and I am really hopeful I can continue to do it as long as I can walk.  Are cyclists sometimes rude?  Yes.  Do they sometimes ignore traffic laws?  Yes.  Probably like the rest of us perfect 90% of the time, not so perfect the other 10%.

There has been a lot of talk lately about making laws and roads more bicycling friendly.  After Mayor Villaraigosa got bumped off his bicycle a few weeks ago he convened  a Los Angeles bicycling summit: http://tinyurl.com/2f29hlo The one law that seems to be getting the most talk on a very broad level (nationally and internationally) is a 3 feet passing law, suggesting automobiles passing bicycles with at least 3 feet of space between.

Keep your eyes on the road and off your phone (ok this applies to me too!), and please give your fellow man a bit of space especially if he is on a bike!

Jason Derulo: Ridin’ Solo

Tipp’s Tip of the Week: Ridin’ Solo

By: Steve Tipp

Share/Bookmark

Ok, I’m ready to go with my Summer Single pick. I know it’s only July 16 but I am going with Pop Single of the Summer Jason Derulo “Ridin’ Solo.” The video is really lame, ok maybe it’s an homage to Michael Jackson, what-ever. I still love the song. The version I have on my iPod starts with a sample from The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony,” which is one of my very favorite songs of all times. I love this groove and it might just really strike me because I hear it riding my bicycle solo and it works.

My Alternative Pop Summer Single is Broken Bells “The High Road” and it is my top album of the year!

Tipp’s Tip: MGMT

Congratulations by MGMT

By: Steve Tipp

Share/Bookmark

MGMT’s debut album “Oracular Spectacular” was one of my favorite debut’s of the last couple of years.  It featured 3 stellar singles and still sounds great on the radio. So their follow-up “Congratulations” was highly anticipated. It is a great album in some ways (mostly sound and artistry) but it doesn’t have the single uuumph of “Oracular…” When young bands have big success many times the follow up is a let down, some times by design!  Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and Green Day’s “Dookie” were both followed by more adventurous and more challenging follow-up’s. So that’s what you get with MGMT’s “Congratulations” a really interesting electro pop record with much more arty hooks than poppy hooks. It’s fun and adventurous but not for the teeny boppers.

Red Dragon in Woodland Hills

Friday Lunch pickred dragon

Looking for a quick, economical choice in Woodland Hills can sometimes be a bit risky. But if you want to be confident in a clean choice with great, cheap lunch specials, step into Red Dragon. The place looks like a disaster from the outside but the interior is totally redone. New booths, painting and a flat screen make this a killer spot to watch the FIFA games. I recommend their Kung Pao chicken and spicy orange chicken for those who like a little kick. You’ll also get a choice of soup, rice and egg rolls at unheard of $5.50. Bring the boys and watch the game!

Because You Didn’t Think Lightbulbs Came in So Many Options

I love a solution that is pure and simple as this is one!cfl

I was looking for light bulbs for the post top lanterns in front of our home.  We have 8 of them and I put CFL bulbs in them but the lowest wattage ones were too bright. I went where I used to go for such solutions, Home Depot. There were no great options and the person working that department gave me a game changer suggestion: Light Bulbs Unlimited. I go to Sherman Oaks and tell the guy my predicament and he says suggest a little flame style bulb (nice), would I like frosted or clear (options!) and a variety of wattages (I went with 7 watts). Since that trip I have been there twice to replace unusual halogen bulbs. I didn’t go anywhere else first and waste a second of time, I went to light bulbs unlimited and they had exactly what I needed!  What’s better than options, options, options and customer service too?

The Santos FC Academy Boys, under 12 team is off to a fast start under the leadership of Brazilian soccer coach JR Lobo.  The team, composed of silver to gold level players from various clubs, joined the California Stars Soccer Club in March.  The new team started off entering three venues this spring.  First, CSL’s Spring League, where they finished in first place in the Western Division.  Next, they entered the CSL Spring Cup, walking away with the cup after finishing number one.  Finally, over Memorial Day weekend, they entered Conejo Valley United’s Tournament of Champions, where they swept the series with three straight wins, scoring 10 goals and giving up 0, and once again winning first place honors.

The team practices every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 at Oak View High School in Oak Park, and holds clinics on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:00 to 7:00.  Players of all levels are welcome.  Coach JR is looking for one more experienced player to round out the team.  They will be playing BU13 in the CSL Silver North division this fall.  For more information on trying out, or practices and clinics, call Coach JR at 818-599-9158.

Tipp’s Tip: Broken Bells

I have been developing a true love of music that is melodic and light on the trancey vibe.

By: Steve Tipp

Share/Bookmark

If you have an inkling for this kind of music the primer I recommend is the Soundtrack to the film “Garden State.”  It features some favorite groups of mine like: Zero 7 and The Shins and is chock full of great music.  I say The Garden State s/t is the contemporary version of “The Big Chill” s/t, swear I just said it yesterday.

Broken Bells is a group formed by musician producer Danger Mouse (one half of Gnarls Barkley “Crazy”) and James Mercer of The Shins.  Here are the three songs that I absolutely love on this debut album: The Ghost Inside – October – and the lead single The High Road (video link below).  I could go on and on but isn’t it best if the music speaks for itself?

Ronnie James Dio

Last week another soldier died in the battle against cancer.

He was the “man on the silver mountain” and I learned this week he may have invented the heavy metal peace sign “the devil horns.”  Ronnie James Dio. I didn’t know a lot about Dio but as I read tributes this week and watched youtube videos my appreciation grew and grew. What a powerful voice and apparently a heart equally large. RIP Ronnie James Dio & Livestrong!
